Landmark Credit Union’s new Oconomowoc branch seamlessly integrates history, cutting-edge technology, and a member-focused design to create a transformative banking experience. This project celebrates the credit union’s rich heritage while embracing forward-thinking innovation. Through thoughtful architecture and advanced banking systems, the branch refines modern banking, offering a space that balances tradition and progress.
SOLUTION:
A Transformative Banking Environment
Landmark’s innovative approach includes the introduction of Swiss-made automated safe deposit boxes, a first in the U.S., that use robotics for secure and efficient access. Operable via card and passcode, these boxes offer unmatched privacy, incorporating switchable glass that transitions from clear to opaque. Additionally, TYME® Advanced ATMs support common daily transactions by utilizing virtual tellers. Banking access was increased through implementing after-hours lockers, enabling members to retrieve important documents such as loan paperwork or cashier’s checks beyond standard business hours.
Milwaukee Legacy Meets Modernity
The design celebrates legacy by featuring iconic Cream City Brick throughout the design, paying homage to the Rex Chainbelt Company where Landmark Credit Union originated. Inspired by historic factory structures, the bowstring trusses, related I-beams, and glasswork also resemble those used in the original Rex Chainbelt factory, combining functional support with aesthetic appeal. This not only evokes the credit union’s deep roots in Milwaukee but also showcases impeccable architectural craftsmanship.
The design team worked to ensure that every design detail properly reflects Landmark’s heritage and community ties. The exterior was no exception as the Landmark sign mimics historic storefront signage, and graphical display inserts pay homage to iconic Oconomowoc imagery. Upon entering the vestibule, visitors are welcomed by a striking display of Landmark’s company history, thoughtfully curated to reflect its legacy. Overhead, the lighting evokes the guiding beam of a lighthouse, symbolizing Landmark’s enduring vision and leadership.
Industrial steel and warm wood accents are featured throughout the design including C-channel steel and locally handcrafted elements. The ceiling’s wood elements add warmth and contrast to the truss’ design focus. Further design elements evoke a restored factory, including custom-era lighting fixtures and modernized “flip” letterboards referencing vintage factory communication board signage. These flip boards are rarely seen in modern design and give members the chance to catch up on company events in a fun, interactive way.
The juxtaposition of heritage and modernity is evident in the lobby’s focal point—a curved custom digital display panel that contrasts with Cream City Brick and steel accents. Further on, the ITM dividers and era furniture incorporate industrial steel, merging the old factory aesthetics with modern innovation. The intentional blend of modern curves, vintage brick and steel elements, and cutting-edge digital banking systems underscores Landmark’s ability to honor its history while embracing the future.
Putting Members First
Spaces within the branch are crafted for member comfort and flexibility. A gradient of member interaction zones includes casual greeting stations at the entrance for immediate support, semi-private media rooms with frosted sliding doors for mid-level confidential conversations, and private offices for sensitive discussions. Multi-purpose conference rooms are equipped with switchable glass and blackout shades adapting to various needs and serve as traditional meeting spaces or private spaces such as a mother’s room.

By blending industrial heritage, advanced technology, and member-centric spaces, this project sets a new standard for modern banking. It honors the past while boldly stepping into the future.
