STEAM Camp 2021

Another year, another STEAM Camp! Things are still looking a little different as we once again went virtual. Campers learn which educational decisions should be made now to prepare for their future careers–virtually!

In this hands-on digital format, campers learned which educational decisions should be made now to prepare for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Strang worked with Urban League of Greater Madison to create this four-day immersive online experience. Campers got the opportunity to learn about these educational pathways from various members of the Madison community.

This completely free program ran for four consecutive days, from August 9-13, 2021. Each day began with informal presentations which introduced campers to people who work within their STEAM disciplines. The goal was to give our campers a realistic, interactive, and fun look at these careers.

Some example sessions included a half-day workshop from MGE that covered solar energy basics, utility industry basics, and MGE’s Net-Zero Carbon Electricity by 2050 goal. The BTC Institute had campers paint with both fluorescence and phosphorescent paint, then illuminate their art with blacklights. Afterward, they learned how bioluminescence is used in both nature and scientific research.

We especially want to thank Randy Banks, VP of Community Engagement, Kathy Williams, Director of First Impressions, and the Urban League of Greater Madison, as well as, Old National Bank, Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland Council, Ho-Chunk Nation, and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County for all their support in carrying out this event.

FULL STEAM AHEAD FOR NEXT YEAR!
