Our History

Strang was founded in 1935, a time of economic uncertainty with years of depression and unemployment as high as 20.1%. But this was also a time of growing optimism, solid values, and perseverance. During these challenging times, Hamilton Beatty and Allen Strang—with that same great optimism and perseverance—founded the Beatty and Strang architectural firm.

In an era of endless hip and gable roof lines, Beatty and Strang’s European-inspired designs dared to buck conventional thinking. The partners specialized in the progressive design of small, International Style houses with simple concrete, stucco, brick, or frame, large expanses of glass, and flat roofs. These non-ornamental block homes averaged about $5,000 each. Their progressive designs and innovative business scope brought them international acclaim in the architectural community. Today, twelve of these homes still exist and have been designated historical landmarks.

In the following years, our founders’ attitude of embracing change, challenging the status quo, and boundless optimism continues to thrive. When Hamilton Beatty and Allen Strang opened their design firm on State Street in Madison in 1935, they might never have imagined how much the City of Madison would grow and change in the years to come. Today, the city boasts a quarter-million people, a leading research university, and an east side business called Strang, Inc. that continues the work humbly started over 88 years ago.
