The annual company picnic may seem like just another way of rewarding employees for their hard work. But the benefits of this traditional event are much greater than many realize.
For many, a company picnic is an annual rite of the summer season. Every year, sometime between June and August, we rent a pavilion, pack up the coolers and fire up the grill. We held Strang’s picnic this past Sunday. But it was much more than a chance to spend another day with our co-workers. The value of this event cannot be over-stated.

You see, during the work week, Strang architects, engineers and interior designers are in constant collaboration. This team approach – especially among different disciplines – requires a level of comfort, trust and respect in one another. Certainly, some of that can be developed across a conference table. But a picnic table provides an even better conduit for developing camaraderie.

At the picnic, retired colleagues return to catch-up with old friends and new staff members get introduced to old friends. When we meet each other’s families, play games and share a burger, we get to know each other on a more personal level. The benefits of the event begin to show up at the office on Monday morning and continue through the year. That’s when we realize the true value of our day at the park.
